Obtenir Son NIE Pour Un Stage En Espagne

To complete an internship in Spain, it is important to consider important administrative details. For this, you need to get the NIE (Foreigners Identification Number) and subscribe to the Spanish Social Security. The consultant in charge of your internship search will guide you through these steps.

NIE (Foreigners Identification Number)

The NIE (Foreigners’ Identification Number) is a compulsory document which allow you to do an internship in Spain if you are not Spanish. The NIE is your all-purpose identification and tax number in Spain. You need it for everything that involves "a tramite" or official process in Spain. NIE number certificates are now being issued with a 3-month validity from the time of issue, after which you are expected to apply for residency, or register as a non-resident. So after three months the certificate is no longer valid.

Documents to bring to get the NIE

  • Your internship agreement (original) in Spanish or original certificate of the host company stating that you will carryout an internship (this will include the dates, sum of contributions). These documents must be signed and stamped by the company
  • Your European social security card + photocopy
  • Your passport or identity card + photocopy
  • Ex-15 Formulary fulfilled

Once the formalities are completed, you will need to pay a fee of 10.40 € to the bank to receive your NIE.

Two options to get the NIE

1. Contact the Spanish consulate to directly manage the NIE from your country. Our advice is to obtain the document before going to Spain because the NIE is compulsory to start the internship. Actually, obtain an appointment in big cities as Barcelona, Ibiza or Madrid is quite difficult because a lot of students or workers are also looking for the NIE at the same time and sometimes you will have to wait 1 or 2 months before getting an appointment.

2. Take an appointment and going to Spain.

Stud&Globe recommends that you arrive at least 1 week before the start date of your internship in order to process your NIE and to rent an apartment.  In the following section, Stud&Globe’s team will advise you how to get your NIE document depending on your city of destination.
