There aretwo types of NIE. You can obtain an NIE "number" or an NIE "card". An NIE number is simply a number written on a piece of paper. The NIE card, on the other hand, is a small green card that will allow you to complete all the paperwork necessary for your daily life in Spain.

The NIE card is only granted if you meet one of the following conditions (for EU citizens):

  • Have a job with a Spanish employer
  • Being self-employed (autonomo)
  • Being a student and having health insurance
  • Have sufficient funds to support yourself

  • European Health Insurance Card + photocopy
  • Passport or identity card + photocopy
