What to do if your internship abroad doesn’t go as planned?

Going on an internship abroad is often an experience we imagine as perfect. A new city, new people, discovering a new culture… Everything seems to fall into place.

But sometimes, reality is different.

Many students face challenges during their internship abroad: culture shock, language barriers, homesickness, or difficulties integrating. These situations are common and part of the adaptation process.

You may find yourself with uninteresting tasks, struggling to integrate, facing a language barrier, or simply feeling out of place within the company. And most importantly, you might ask yourself: “Is this normal? Did I make the right choice?”

The answer is simple: yes, it’s normal.

And most importantly, it’s not a dead end. Even an international internship that doesn’t go as planned can become an extremely enriching experience, if you adopt the right mindset.

🧠 Take a step back before reacting

When something goes wrong, the first instinct is often to panic or want to quit. However, the best thing you can do is to take a step back.

The first few weeks abroad are often the most challenging. You are changing your entire environment, your habits, your language… It takes time to adapt.

Ask yourself the right questions: is this a real problem or just an adjustment phase? Were your expectations realistic? Do you clearly understand what is expected from you?

What you are feeling may be linked to culture shock, a normal emotional and psychological adaptation phase in a new environment. With time and the right strategies, this phase fades.

In many cases, this discomfort is temporary. Adaptation is an integral part of the international experience.

🗣️ Communicate, even if it’s not easy

This is often where everything changes.

When something isn’t right, we tend to keep it to ourselves. Out of fear of bothering others, struggling to express ourselves in another language, or giving a bad impression.

But in reality, communication is essential.

If you don’t say anything, no one can guess that you’re struggling.

Talk to your supervisor, your manager, or someone you trust in the company. Explain your situation calmly and constructively. The goal is not to complain, but to find solutions.

Very often, small adjustments can significantly improve your experience: new tasks, more guidance, clearer expectations…

💼 Adapt to a new work culture

An internship abroad is not just a job. It’s also an immersion into a different way of working.

You may be surprised by:

  • a more flexible, or more structured organization;
  • a more direct, or more indirect communication style;
  • a different work pace.

Instead of comparing with what you know, try to understand this new culture.

This ability to adapt is a key skill today. It shows that you can thrive in an international environment.

🚀 Step out of your comfort zone

An internship that doesn’t go as planned is often one that helps you grow.

It’s in these moments that you develop:

  • your resilience;
  • your independence;
  • your ability to deal with uncertainty.

Even if it feels uncomfortable, these are exactly the skills recruiters are looking for.

An internship abroad is not just a line on your CV. It’s a human experience that transforms you.

👥 Don’t stay alone with your difficulties

When you are abroad, far from your usual environment, challenges can feel amplified.

That’s why it’s important not to stay isolated.

Talk to your friends, other students, or the organization supporting you. Having an external perspective often helps you step back and find solutions more quickly.

You are not supposed to “endure” your internship. You can take action.

🔎 Know when to take action

Sometimes, despite all your efforts, the situation doesn’t improve.

If you are facing:

  • a complete lack of tasks;
  • an unsuitable work environment;
  • or real discomfort.

It’s important not to ignore these warning signs.

Solutions exist: adjust your responsibilities, change departments, or in some cases, consider an alternative.

The goal is not to “push through at all costs,” but to ensure your experience abroad remains constructive.

💪🏻 Turn this experience into a strength

Even if your internship isn’t perfect, it still holds great value.

You learn more about yourself. You develop strong soft skills. You gain real international experience.

And most importantly, you learn how to bounce back.

Being able to explain how you handled a difficult situation is often far more impactful than having a “perfect” experience.

This is exactly the kind of experience that makes a difference on a CV… and in interviews.

🌱 An experience that helps you grow

An internship abroad is never a perfectly linear journey. There are highlights, challenges, and sometimes unexpected situations.

But it’s exactly this mix that makes the experience unique.

Even if things don’t go as planned, you are living something meaningful. You are evolving, learning, and adapting.

And in the end, that is the true value of an international experience.
