Spanish tests: which one should you take for your internship abroad?

The myth to forget: “my school Spanish will be enough”

On your CV, writing “fluent Spanish” is no longer enough. International recruiters expect an official test, with a precise score and a validity date.

1. DELE: the global reference test (lifetime validity)
The DELE (Diplomas de Español como Lengua Extranjera) is THE reference test for Spanish.
Why choose it?
- Issued by the Instituto Cervantes (the Spanish equivalent of the British Council)
- Officially recognized by the Spanish government
- Lifetime validity
- 6 levels according to the CEFR (A1 to C2)
- Recognized in more than 100 countries
Who is it for? Students aiming for an internship in Spain or in a Spanish company, or those who want a long-lasting certification on their CV.
Level to aim for an internship abroad: at least B1, ideally B2 or C1.
As the Instituto Cervantes explains, DELE is the only official certification recognized by the Spanish Ministry of Education.
2. SIELE: the digital and modular version
The SIELE (Servicio Internacional de Evaluación de la Lengua Española) is the modern and online version of DELE.
Why choose it?
- 100% online, to be taken in an authorized center
- Jointly issued by the Instituto Cervantes, UNAM (Mexico), the University of Salamanca and the University of Buenos Aires
- Results in 3 weeks
- Independent modules (reading, listening, writing, speaking)
- Score out of 1000 points, aligned with the CEFR
- Validity: 5 years
Who is it for? Students who want a fast, flexible and recognized test across the entire Spanish-speaking world (Spain AND Latin America).
Score to aim for: 600/1000+ for an internship, ideally 750+.
According to SIELE, it is the only test that covers all varieties of Spanish (peninsular, American, Mexican, etc.).
3. CELU: the passport to Latin America
The CELU (Certificado de Español, Lengua y Uso) is the official test of Argentinian universities.
Why choose it?
- Recognized by the Argentinian government and Latin American universities
- Assesses real-life use of the language, not school grammar
- Lifetime validity
- 3 levels: Intermediate, Upper Intermediate, Advanced
Who is it for? Students aiming for an internship in Argentina, Uruguay, Chile or another Latin American country.
Good to know: less known in Europe, but essential if you are going to South America.
4. TELC Español: the European alternative
TELC Español is a European test, offered by the German organization TELC.
Why choose it?
- Recognized in more than 20 European countries
- Aligned with the CEFR (A1 to C2)
- Standardized European format
- Often cheaper than DELE
Who is it for? Students who want a test recognized in continental Europe (Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy…).

5. CCSE: good to know, but not for your internship
The CCSE (Conocimientos Constitucionales y Socioculturales de España) is often confused with a language test.
To remember:
- It is not a language level test
- It assesses cultural and constitutional knowledge of Spain
- It is required for Spanish nationality, not for an internship
In short, useful for those aiming for naturalization, but useless for your internship abroad.
