What is the cost of living on the Balearic Islands?

In general, the cost of living in the Balearics is higher than in mainland Spain, especially in popular tourist areas such as Ibiza, Mallorca or Menorca. Accommodation and tourist activities are the main expenses. If you're a student or trainee, it's advisable to look for shared accommodation options or on the outskirts of major cities to keep costs down. Leisure activities and nightlife can also be expensive, but more affordable alternatives exist, especially for those who prefer outdoor activities or nature outings.

What leisure options are available to me in my free time?

The Balearic Islands offer a wide range of activities: relaxation on beautiful beaches, water sports, hiking, cultural and historical exploration, lively nightlife, wellness, local gastronomy and unspoilt nature. Each island has its own unique charm and offers plenty of opportunities to make the most of your free time.

Frequently asked questions

The Balearic work culture can be more informal than in other parts of Spain, especially in the tourist sector. Working hours are often longer during the peak summer season, but you’ll probably get some breaks for meals. Staff are generally very service-oriented, especially in the tourism, hotel and catering sectors.
The Balearics, particularly Palma de Mallorca and Ibiza, are international tourist destinations. This means that many locals speak several languages, including English, German and of course Spanish and Catalan (which is also the official language of the Balearics). Integrating can be relatively easy, especially if you make the effort to learn a few words in Spanish or Catalan. There are also expatriate groups and events for young professionals.
The Balearic Islands offer many ways to travel in your spare time, whether between the islands, to mainland Spain, or even to other European destinations. If you’re looking for local discoveries, ferries and car rentals are ideal. For more distant escapades, scheduled flights let you quickly visit other major Spanish or European cities. Whatever your choice, there’s always an option to make the most of your free time while exploring the region’s riches!
