Hiring an intern in Spain

Hosting an intern may seem complex, but our team of Stud&Globe consultants is here to help you manage all the documentation required for an internship in Spain.

THE TRAINING AGREEMENT PROVIDED BY THE TRAINING CENTER

The internship agreement is a document signed by the student, the company and the training center. This document must specify all information relating to the internship:

  • Name of company and agreement signatories
  • Location
  • Dates and times
  • Assignments
  • Name and position of tutor
  • Compensation and bonuses
  • Insurance

Stud&Globe offers applications from students who already have a valid internship agreement issued by their training center.

NON-SPANISH STUDENTS MUST OBTAIN A NIE (FOREIGNERS’ IDENTIFICATION NUMBER)

For all internships of over 2 months, non-Spanish students must obtain a NIE (Identification Number for Foreigners) in order to carry out an internship in Spain.

The NIE can be obtained in two ways:

  • You can make an appointment online, depending on your destination city, and then go to the foreigners’ police station.
  • From their country of origin, by contacting the Spanish consulate in their city of residence. Obtaining an NIE can take between 2 and 3 weeks.

For more information, please see our article on the documentation required for an internship in Spain.

THE NEW OBLIGATION FOR COMPANIES TO PAY SOCIAL SECURITY CONTRIBUTIONS

Spanish Social Security contributions have recently become compulsory for all companies taking on trainees, and these contributions are fixed.

The company must first register the student with Social Security and open a contribution account. Then, each month, the company must pay :

  • Contingencias comunes: 30.98 euros
  • Accidente laboral: 4.26 euros
  • Trainees must also contribute 6 euros a month to Social Security.

Stud&Globe assists companies and students to ensure that documentation is in order before the start of the internship. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact one of our consultants via our contact page.

IRPF WITHHOLDING ON TRAINEE REMUNERATION

Spanish law requires companies to withhold a certain percentage from the remuneration of interns, depending on their tax status:

  • Without NIE: 24%
  • Non-resident: 19
  • Spanish and Resident: 2% of total

We’ll be happy to answer any questions you may have about these administrative procedures, and to help you recruit interns in Spain.
