What is the cost of living on the Canary Islands?

The cost of living in the Canary Islands is fairly moderate, offering good value for money, especially when compared with other tourist destinations. The average monthly budget for a single person can vary between €900 and €1,200, depending on your lifestyle and accommodation choices.

Getting around the Canary Islands

Getting around the Canary Islands is relatively easy, thanks to a varied transport network. For inter-island travel, domestic flights and scheduled ferries are available. On each island, public transport includes buses ("guaguas") and, in some towns such as Tenerife, streetcars. Car rental is very popular for exploring the islands, especially on larger islands like Gran Canaria and Tenerife. Cabs and VTC services such as Uber are also common, as are bike and scooter rentals in tourist areas. Last but not least, the islands offer a wealth of hiking opportunities to discover their natural landscapes.

Frequently asked questions

If you’re a citizen of a European Union (EU) or European Economic Area (EEA) country, you don’t need a visa to do an internship in the Canary Islands. If you’re from another country, you’ll probably need to obtain a visa, such as a student or work visa. Contact the Spanish embassy or consulate to find out about the specific procedures in your case.
The Canary Islands enjoy a subtropical climate with pleasant temperatures all year round. Temperatures are cooler in winter (around 18°C-22°C) and warmer in summer (between 25°C and 30°C). There can be variations from island to island, with hotter, drier conditions on islands like Fuerteventura and more temperate conditions on islands like La Palma.
The official language is Spanish. However, in tourist areas and big cities, you’ll find many people speaking English and other languages such as German, due to the large tourist population. So it’s a good idea to learn some basic Spanish to help you integrate and communicate with the locals.
